Designing papercraft by hand

A discussion on the design of papercraft without the aid of 3D programs.

So, anyway, /pw/, how hard do you think it is to design something by hand? I mean, making Haruhi or a multi-dimentional curve may be hard, but if you are designing a building or other geometrically simple object, you could duke it out pencil and paper. All basic papercraft design really needs is polygons, arcs, circles, and frustums, with tabs. (And maybe textures). As I am more interested in making mechanical papercraft and skyscrapers and such than masks and anime figurines (I still love that stuff to death), I don't see why it would be a problem.

Considering writing a program to help draw out, texture, and print papercraft designed this way, IF I get less lazy (havent gotten 20% done with tutorials yet) and bother looking up the specifics of GUI's and all that fun stuff.

What do y'all think?

http://zip.4chan.org/po/res/199214.html
This thread from /po/ caught my interest, so I started on the Sol Emeralds, and I'm in need of a test builder.
Evidently I wasn't the only one unsure of the other dimensions of the emeralds (I could only find sprites that provided a front view), so I made three different versions. One is a flat, almost LoZ Rupee-like shape, one is more like a rectangular prism, and the other mocks an emerald cut.

Original:

The whole kit (a .rar), with .pdos and .pdfs (with and without lines) for each build is available for download here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?unnu0qznmow

Probably going to work on my own version of the regular chaos emeralds next.

I've got an idea, and I hope to rely on the experience of my betters here at /pw/.

My wife and I are going to be in a position to build our dream home (well, minus the Batcave basement and the Jeffries tubes) within a couple of years. In the meantime, we're kicking around design ideas. But if you've ever worked with blueprints - or napkin sketches - you know that 2D is kinda limiting.

What I'm hoping to do is make a floorplan of my home design idea - then construct it as a scale papercraft which can be lifted off floor-by-floor (and perhaps even modular enough to remove rooms or sectors) to give a better impression of what's in my head. It seems straightforward enough, but I really want it to look good, with swinging doors and textured surfaces, right down to having the tub and shower and major furniture and whatnot be pop-up or actual fixtures. So I ask the following questions:

How should I go about starting? Seems like a 3D modeling program might not really be what I'm after.

Am I stupid for trying?

Has anyone seen a craft like this - better yet, designed one?

Looks like it's that time of year, and the amount of seasonal papercrafts floating around the net are lacking. I am issuing a contest to make any Halloween-themed papercraft from scratch, simple or complex. Pumpkins, witches, the works.

Only requirement is that you actually build it, not just design.

The contest will be judged on the 30th, and the contest winner will be rewarded on the 31st. Price is undetermined, but is most likely going to be cash. How much, I don't know, probably cheap. We can discuss terms. (I am doing this out of the good of my heart/wallet, after all).

Personnally, the idea occured to me while I was looking at the N64 logo model.

You will notice the textureis not perfect but still, the model will come out all on 1 sheet and bout 5 or 6 cm each edge. Now unfolding will come around later. Right now, I'm gonna draw myself a better looking icon.

Easy programs to handle modeling and/or textures, or even some tutorials would be very appreciated ^^'

I had patterns for these LONG before I knew who Turbolabo was.

Curse the internet for not providing sources for these, and just the raw.

IF you happen to get an SD model of his, and no instructions, he almost always has a section about his build process in his blog.

Here's the blog page for his design and build of the HI-V Gundam SD

http://turbolaboblog.seesaa.net/category/4746094-1.html

I copy that link and past it into babelfish.yahoo.com to translate from japanese to english. Its not terribly precise, but its useful, and usually understandable.

He's got a LOT of SD's in here. I dont know if I have downloaded them all yet.

Click on a picture, you see the full size pic. (for pattern pics, its the pattern you save.)

Clicking on "seeing more" takes you to the blog post where he builds it.

Pretty awesome site.

Its like that roll on white out, except it dispenses strong, instant bonding adhesive that will grip onto any kind of surface. also it dries instantly so no waiting around. there is a downside. You need to apply pressure for it to work so its not too good for doing things like attaching arms and legs (like on the ninjatoes Midna model, augh what a nightmare.) But general purpose glueing on larger tabs it works GREAT!

So, I've been a fan of Turbolabo's SD gundams for a while now. So much so in fact, my son is going to go as his Freedom SD model for halloween (yes, we're using the model to build a cosplay costume)

Recently an SD Gundam X model was released. (not by Turbolabo)

I downloaded it, and built it about 50%… then stopped. I didn't really like the way it was turning out. Too much SD, and not enough Gundam X.

So, I took a couple of Turbolabo's designs (the F91 and the RX-93-2) and used them as the basis for the pattern I'm developing. I'm now in test build phase.

Here's the Head

The finished model is only slighty modified from this, fixing a couple small things I found wrong while putting this together.

Now onto the chest.

paperworks.wikidot.com

THIS IS AN ANNOUNCEMENT FOR ALL /po/ REGULARS

To sum up what has happened thus far:
•/b/ raids got some of us thinking of escaping
•convenience of /po/ too convenient to truly leave
•several of us decided to create a "Satellite" forum that will exist, which is free for /po/eple to join

And so, "the Paperworks", AKA "/pw/" is born.

/pw/ is meant to be a more robust and in-depth forum allowing people to:
• post in sections to keep things organized
• create user profiles with links to all of their work
• Communicate privately with eachother.
• act as a DEDICATED community.

Nothing will be auto-deleted just because it's been spammed off the edge of the earth (though archiving will still be carried out for sake of keeping free space). IN FACT, spamming and general idiocy will be at a minimum, given several factors-
• /b/ doesn't have a direct link to it at the top of the website at all times
• registration requires that you have a wikidot profile with unique VALID information, PLUS you need to register at the paperworks itself. Spammers will get bored of re-registering using new e-mails and contact info every time they get banned, and spambots can't make their way through the maze of registration.

News on topics relevant to everyone's interests will be available through an RSS feed, as will ALL forum categories, threads, and even user activity. Just click a button and you'll be notified via your RSS reader of choice when new topics arise, someone comments on your work, or when that creator you love makes a new project.

We will continue development of the board to accompany any and all needs of the users, and we will ALWAYS keep our roots with /po/.

I'm sure a few of you might not have caught this, or didn't know of a few of the features. Here ya go.

The colour on the outside will be the colour of most of the hat, the colour on the inside will be the trim, keep this in mind with single sided papers.

Fold each corner to the bottom as shown.

Fold both tips to the bottom.

Fold bottom tips to the CENTRE AS SHOWN (This confuses most people so don't worry if you get it wrong). Do this for both sides.

Fold top to below centre of entire paper, you can change this considering how high you would like your "crest". Fold over your excess paper and this will form the trim of the hat.

Flip over, and fold remaining paper into the helmet (Neatly) and Voila! Your Japanese paper Kabuto is ready!

Hey everyone, Dalndox here.

Thanks to Dai's quick thinking, we (read:he) found a quick tutorial on getting a forum up and running. I know it's a little simple now, and between working full-time and spending time with people, I'm gonna' try to get this thing looking as sexy as possible. I don't think it's too bad, considering it's my first time playing around with Wikidot, but generally speaking it's not much different than Invisionfree, which I've worked with quite a bit.

Also, as admin I'm going to be lording over the forums with Dai here. Unfortunately, the aforementioned full-time job keeps me from papercrafting like I wish I could, so I won't be contributing as much as I'd like to. Regardless, I/we will be overseeing things, keeping out the trolls, and making sure everything runs reasonably smooth. We'll keep you nice and safe.

Now, if you guys have any major suggestions on layouts, witty board descriptions, etc., just drop a line here and I'll see what I can do.

Alright, so after reading around, my list of things to fix/add are…

WIP category. We can make different boards for Papercraft, Origami, etc. I'm thinking that once a project is finished, we can just move it over to it's respective board. The OP can fix up their post accordingly as they see fit.

Cleaning, dusting, body-removal. You know, the usual.

Alright guys, give me some suggestions. I want to make this board awesometacular, but I need your help!

Creators:

I am giving everyone an opportunity to display yourself and your work in a much more organized and customized way than even I had hoped.

The Creators section (found in the sidebar to your left, the Members bar up top, and right here, is quick-reference table of users who are literally forging this community.
The list includes:

your name and/or profile picture

what you're best at here at /pw/

links to your "Creator's profile" and/or website.

I'm thinking of making everything editable by regular users to avoid the whole "user power level" thing, since right now it's just regular users and moderators. I'd have to make a subset somehow for special access, and that's just not happening.

SO, you will (presumably) be able to add yourself to the list, as well as create your own profile page via the "Add New Page" widget on the left sidebar.

(someone let me know if you can do this already, please)

all is well.

Right, well, I'll be the first to post here. Also Dai, we need a separate section for WIPs, IMHO.

Anyway, this is going to be the base of operations for my FAMAS G2 model that I'm currently working on. I haven't gotten much further than last night as I still can only see my background image in the camera viewpoint, where the image is garbled up a bit and of course it can't serve it's purpose as reference if the object I'm trying to use it for isn't at the exact same angle.

First few pics:

This was the very first render made of the model, so as you can see it's more of a carved out block of iron. The lighting doesn't show it but I've already cut out the area where you can theoretically insert magazines in later.

Here you see a scaled and slightly progressed version of the FAMAS, with the butt and handle mostly done. I've also improved the lighting and completed the magholder just so you guys can see it. I know, I know, I'm too good for this world. Strangely enough my alignment is Chaotic Evil, but okay.
This is the first unfold in Pepakura Designer, and a close up of what the handle(pretty much the most detailed and curved part of the gun) at an almost fullscale build would look like.
So there ya have it, the first project posted on /pw/. I feel so proud of the child of my labor that he was able to take such a significant step for his kind!

Now Chamoo, get your ass and your D0g over here this instant!

(still an evolving list, we need to try living before we figure out what we do wrong)

Above all else, this place is to remain clean. Trolling and spamming will be culled to a minimum just by having this place separated from 4chan, but this still means we have to behave ourselves and create a community that will be inviting to newcomers who aren't hardened by the abuse 4chan has put us through.

that means:

No Flaming. We're here to be part of a community, not to be two sides of a riot. Posts that are demeaning in nature will be warned, threats and violence gets you in some trouble. Moderators don't have to do anything about you, the general public can rate you as an abusive member and you'll dig your own grave.

No "extreme" language. Common cursing and swearing are acceptable (to a degree, of course), but some of the stuff that rotates commonly about 4chan is going to be a bannable offense, mostly on grounds of flaming. Hopefully soon we can implement a word filter to avoid problems in the future.

No shock images. This includes (but is not limited to) sexually explicit images of ALL depictions, pictures depicting death or masochistic acts, Shock-Site Classics (not saying anything, you know what they are), and so on.
Hello Dia. Thanks for taking the lead on this and setting it up for us. It will be nice to read ENGLISH in Papercraft forum without having to use google translate or babelfish.yahoo lol.

I'm putting this here to offer you some suggestions, and to let the other members post ideas as they come in.

1. Your little tags idea, showing what each post is about? THAT would be a cool feature to impliment. I don't know much about this specific program (read: nothing) but it should be a simple matter to add the button selection process to your CREATE THREAD page. Then, in the FORUM, there's usually a tag showing the post "status" (ie. HOT, BUSY, Slow, etc) you could just replace the lines of code that tell the main forum software to display this icon with your custom icon.

2. A General discussion section, maybe in the ANNOUNCEMENTS forum, so we can have non-post specific topics. This should help absorb some of the cross chat that would otherwise be bound to pop up in most of the threads. Ya, we haven't been too active in /po/ but maybe now that we have a home, we'll start seeing multilingual visitors.

3. Maybe an IRC channel as well, or a "chatbox" style plugin. (you can see a chatbox in action on the e-107 forum main site @ www.e107.com) Again, its a place for members to blow off steam (and spam) without spamming up the forums. (think of it as a /po/st without pics) THIS HAS BEEN ACHIEVED THANKS TO YOU! ~Paper

4. File Uploads: I see that images are allowed, what about different filetypes. PDF of course, but what about .zip .rar .7z or other archive files. The only thing to watch out for is 1. file size. Some of these things are bound to get huge. and 2. VIRUS or TROJAN. That's why the files uploaded are limited. Also I'm not sure what kind of coding (html, php, etc) can be entered into the post area's. You might consider disabling some of these. My webforum got hacked up pretty bad and it took me 3 weeks to fix it because some member loaded a PHP file he thought was cool, and turned out it had an embedded hijack tool in it, that invaded the site, and turned it into a porn site for 24 hours. (try explaining that to you 14 year old nephew when he comes to see the site you're running… not fun)

Other than those 4, that's all I can think of at the moment.

If you need any help, give a holler. I have a few years of Forum Ownership/Admin/Moderator status on other forums(www.evamade.net is mine), so if you need to bounce ideas off someone, don't hesitate.
